2011's Best Episodes: Flights and Tights and the Final Friday Night Lights Goodbye

Friday Night Lights From Oprah's surprisingly low-key farewell to the year's most soul-crushing break-up on The Good Wife (Kalicia, no!), the year was packed with fantastic hours of television - pretty much all of which we watched. There were teary goodbyes (Friday Night Lights' Texas forever! Smallville's tights and flights!), tense face-offs (why can't all CIA interrogations take place on the front porch of a cabin, like on Homeland?) and of course we made room for a little Glee (because certain underdogs deserved it). Which made the list. Tune in all week for our top 25. Here's the fifth batch in our weeklong countdown of 2011's best episodes (Catch up first with Episodes 25-21, Episodes 20-16, Episodes 15-11 and Episodes 10-6. Or browse the full list here.): 5. "Finale," SmallvilleIt took 10 years for Clark Kent to become Superman, but the series finale soared as the Man of Steel (in his super suit at long last!) took flight. Like a proud parent, our hearts swelled as we watched Clark realize his full potential after a decade's worth of trials, and fittingly, both of his fathers (Jor-El and an apparition of Jonathan Kent) presented him with the cape before he took off to save the world once more. 4. "Palestinian Chicken," Curb Your EnthusiasmHis appetite or his religion? His sex life or his religion? For anyone who knows Larry David, it's pret-ty, pret-ty, pret-ty clear which he'll choose, but that doesn't make this Season 8 episode any less entertaining to watch (even if it does make you feel a little guilty for laughing so hard). At issue: Larry's new favorite restaurant, Al Abbas, is a chicken place run by Palestinians where the walls are covered with anti-Israel posters and the hot Palestinian manager, Shara, wants Larry to, um, occupy her, like she says Israel did her country -- what to do? Throw in Larry's rampage against the acronym "LOL" and you've got the perfect portrait of comedy's best social assassin. 3. "Face Off," Breaking BadBreaking Bad's season's worth of twists and tension culminated in a pulsating, relentless and jaw-dropping finale that will go down as one of TV's best. For one, there's the indelible, gross and awesome image of Gus' half-disfigured face after he emerged ostensibly unharmed from a bomb blast. But the ultimate "holy crap!" came in the final, game-changing seconds when we learn that Walt had poisoned Brock -- a reveal that tested the limits of our sympathy for him and showed that he had no ethical limits anymore. Walt is indeed the one who knocks. 2. "Flu Season," Parks and RecreationDementia! Vomiting! Pooping! In the hands of lesser folks, hitting a cast of sitcom characters with the flu could be a prescription for some really easy, lame, tired jokes. In the hands of TV's best comedy Parks and Recreation, it's an inspired choice. What would happen if Chris' perfected human health was compromised? Can Leslie rally when she has a speech to give but the floor and the wall have switched? In sickness and in health, we love this show. 1. "Always," Friday Night LightsAs Friday Night Lights stepped into TV's white light, we held our collective breath, tears at the ready. Would we be able to say goodbye to Dillon with just one box of tissue? In the end, the once-embattled Lions overcame, winning State, and Coach Taylor, who we want to be when we grow up, finally decided that it was, in fact, Tami's turn to pursue her dreams in Philadelphia. Still, when the sun set for the final time in Dillon - and we were crying, "No, don't go!" -- Tim and Billy reminded us that it would be Texas forever for all who had watched FNL's five amazing seasons.

Morgan grilled over U.K. phone hacking

Morgan CNN anchor and former British tabloid editor Piers Morgan has denied all knowledge of phone hacking at the Daily Mirror, one of two national papers he edited.Questioned Tuesday by the government inquiry into press ethics, conducted by Lord Justice Brian Leveson, Morgan said he had no reason to "believe it was going on" at the Mirror during his almost 10-year tenure, which ended in 2004.Speaking to the U.K. via video link from the U.S. where he now lives, Morgan told the inquiry: "Not a single person has made a formal or legal complaint against the Daily Mirror for phone hacking."The Leveson inquiry is separate to the parliamentary probe into phone hacking at Rupert Murdoch's now defunct News of the World Sunday tabloid, which Morgan edited in 1994-95, years before the scandal emerged.Morgan was also asked about a report by the British Information Commissioner's Office that found that 45 Mirror journalists were mentioned in the files of private investigator Steve Whittamore.Morgan insisted that "all journalists knew they had to operate within the law. That was enshrined in their contracts of employment."He was grilled about a recording of a voicemail message left by Paul McCartney for his then-wife Heather Mills when the couple were experiencing difficulties in their short-lived marriage. The CNN presenter, who quit as a judge on NBC's "America's Got Talent" to concentrate on his "Piers Morgan Tonight" talkshow in November, claimed that listening to the message was not unethical, but declined to provide details of how it happened to protect his source.Questioned about his views on privacy and how the press treats big names, he said: "I have very little sympathy with celebrities who sell their weddings for 1 million -- one of the most private days of their lives -- and then expect to have privacy if they get caught having affairs."They are the very last people who should be protected by a privacy law."After the session, Morgan said he had felt like a "badly treated rock star" whose low points were constantly repeated while his successes were ignored. Mike Ryan's Year-End 5 Best Top Movies List

I received an urgent notice this morning that, because it's the end of the calendar year, it's my responsibility to write a top movies list. I find this peculiar. Why would anyone want to read a list of top movies written by me? At the end of the year? It just seems like such a specific request, I can't imagine that anyone would want to read my list of top movies. And, to be honest, I'm not trying to be smug, but there really aren't a lot of top movies out there -- especially from this year. Alas, I'm not one to ignore a direct order from a superior, so here's a list of the Five Best Top Movies. [Ed. note: We meant "Top Five Best Movies"] 'Inception' (2010) Dom Cobb uses a top as a totem in order to differentiate between reality and the subconscious. The final scene of the movie is this top, making it the best top movie. 'My Summer Story' a.k.a. 'It' Runs in the Family (1994) Did you know there's a sequel to 'A Christmas Story'? Different actors, but all of the same characters and everything! But instead of being about Christmas, it's about tops. This is why you've probably never heard of 'My Summer Story.' 'The Hebrew Hammer' (2003) Long before Mordechai Carver becomes The Hebrew Hammer, he spins a dreidel. Which is a lot like a top. Beyblade: The Movie (2004) In this Japanese animated series' movie adaptation, the characters battle against each other using tops, which are titled Beyblades -- hence the name of the series and the movie. Justice League Unlimited (2005) Yes, this is a TV series, but in one episode there is a super villain named Top who can spin around like a top. And, someday, if there's ever a live-action movie based on The Flash (Top and The Flash don't like each other) and Top is included, he will automatically make the list of best top movies. We Are Not Cool Enough for an Absolutely Fabulous Movie

Jennifer Saunders will begin scripting a feature version of her classic BBC series Absolutely Fabulous sometime next year, after she finishes work on the Spice Girls stage musical Viva Forever in London. Deadline reports that Ab Fab: The Movie will open with “Patsy and Edina waking up hungover in the empty drifting yacht of an oligarch in the middle of the ocean. Even worse, their cellphones can’t get a signal.” I’m torn — I want to be excited that the movie’s happening, but I can’t shake the paralyzing sadness of Ab Fab’s most recently aborted revival. Roseanne famously tried to revive Absolutely Fabulous with Carrie Fisher and Barbara Carrera in an American version years ago, but I’m still lamenting the missed opportunity of Kristen Johnston and Kathryn Hahn as Eddy and Patsy in 2009’s aborted stateside TV remake. Look at that beautiful potential. How can you not root for Kristen Johnston? We don’t have many 6’0 character actresses with two Emmys left. Laurie Metcalf is not that tall. Furthermore, don’t you sometimes stop and wonder why the U.S. can’t make Ab Fab-y shows like Kath & Kim successful? Because Kath & Kim was funny, dammit. I saw Molly Shannon on Jimmy Kimmel Live recently, and she’s funnier than the entire ABC lineup right now. For our fix of loopy women, we have to turn to lazy, humdrum sitcoms like 2 Broke Girls, which is pretty much a crime. Oh well. Let’s enjoy this Ab Fab reel and disappear into the past. Brazil: Indies turn to local pics

'Bruna Surfistinha'With the collapse of the homevideo DVD market, local indie distribs are increasingly turning to the distribution of Brazilian pics in order to make ends meet. The total B.O. in Brazil reached 1.1 billion real ($627 million) in the January-September period, up 19% from the same period last year. But indie distribs have a small slice of this market that is dominated by Hollywood.Meanwhile, in 2009 the federal government launched the Sector Fund incentive, with one of its aims to stimulate local indie distribs to distribute Brazilian pics. In the 2009-11 time frame, indie distribs have received $34.7 million to buy equity in local pics and distribute them."The fall of the DVD market represented a major blow for the distribution of independent films in Brazil," says Marcio Fraccaroli, general director of local indie distrib Paris Filmes. "As the studios rule the theatrical market, we had to seek an option to survive. Thanks to the Sector Fund, we found that option in the distribution of Brazilian films."All top three indies pics in 2011 are Brazilian and were distributed by locals: "De pernas pro ar" (Upside Down), handled jointly by Downtown/Paris distribution; "Cilada.com," distribbed jointly by Downtown/Paris/RioFilme; and "Bruna Surfistinha" handled jointly by Imagem/RioFilme.In spite of the unfavorable market, it is still possible to make good money with the distribution of foreign indie pics in Brazil. For instance, Paris, which since 2007 has an output deal with Summit Entertainment, has profited from the three installments of the "Twilight" films. General director Marcio Fraccaroli says Paris Filmes will open "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1" Nov. 18 on 1,100 screens here -- the largest theatrical release ever in Brazil. Film was also partially shot in Brazil."We plan to sell over 7 million tickets and make 'Breaking Dawn' the film with the highest B.O. this year in Brazil. But the 'Twilight Saga' is really an exception in this market," Fraccaroli says.Meanwhile, several local production companies launched Nossa, an indie distrib with an alternative business model, in October. Nossa will provide distribution services for a fixed fee, and producers will have to cover P&A costs. But, if the release is successful, the producer will pocket the bulk of the gains. Under this model, the producer will hold pics' rights to other windows.Nossa was created by helmer Jose Padilha, based on the highly successful distribution of "Elite Squad: The Enemy Within" in 2010, when Padilha's Zazen shingle hired vet distributor exec Marco Aurelio Marcondes to release the pic, which became highest-grossing Brazilian pic ever.Number of screens: 2,314Number of 3D screens: 467Top indie distribs and B.O. through the first half of 2011: Imagem ($38.4 million); Paris ($20.5 million); Downtown/Paris joint distribution ($15.8 million); Playarte ($6.7 million); Imovision ($3 million)Typical gross split for theatrical between distribs and exhibs: 50/50Top exhibition chains for indie films: Espaco de Cinema screens all types of pics, but focuses on foreign and local indie pics. It is Brazil's fifth largest exhibitor, and has 21 plexes with 90 screens, which represents 4% of the country's screens. Grupo Estacao has nine multiplexes with 24 screens in Rio.Top 5 indie films: "De pernas pro ar" (Upside Down), Downtown/Paris ($17.9 million); "Cilada.com," Downtown/Paris/RioFilme ($16.1 million); "Bruna Surfistinha," Imagem/RioFilme ($11.4 million); "Gnomeo and Juliet," Imagem ($7.8 million); "Season of the Witch," Imagem ($7.7 million)Upcoming indie pickups: "Under the Hawthorn Tree" (Serendip Filmes/ Art Films): "Sarah's Key" (Imagem); "The Good Doctor" (Playarte); "Late Bloomers" (Serendip Filmes/Art Films); "The Skin I Live In" (Paris) Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Sales companies petition to keep AFM at beach

Even though it's two years away, a proposed move of the American Film Market from Santa Monica to downtown Los Angeles is already provoking resistance. As the AFM launched on a sunny Wednesday at its traditional beachside location at the Loews Hotel, about 40 signers went public with opposition to such a move via an online petition. Signers include reps of IFDC, Artists View, Constantin, UFO, W2 and Imagem. "I join this petition as Santa Monica is the best place for the AFM," wrote Atlas's Michel J. Vandewalle. "Having lived myself in L.A. for years, I find this area as the best and safest place for our international buyers to visit. Therefore I do not understand why there is a need to move it downtown where walking around freely is not really that obvious. It will restrict the people to meet in a open free way and disperse them all over town as not everyone will be able to spend money on the expensive hotels in this area." The Independent Film and Television Alliance confirmed in September that it was negotiating to relocate the 2013 American Film Market to L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles. The 2012 mart would remain in Santa Monica. AFM managing direcor Jonathan Wolf told Variety, "No decision has been made about 2013. We are listening to everyone's opinions on this." The association pointed out in September that relocating to downtown Los Angeles would mean lower hotel and exhibition costs for both buyers and sellers and better screening venues at the Regal Cinemas and Nokia Theater -- and that by 2014, there will be more hotel rooms surrounding L.A. Live than in the Loews Santa Monica area. "The L.A. Live district will allow us to grow all segments of the AFM -- market, conferences and the celebration of film -- and make the AFM more inclusive for the entire motion picture industry," said IFTA at the time. Anchor Bay's Kevin Kasha told Variety that AFM's beachside location provides an alluring setting that would be hard to give up. "I just got out of a screening and the first thing that I saw was the beach," he added. The petition noted that for more than 15 years, Santa Monica has been the "ideal location" for buyers. "Its facilities and the beach have been praised around the world and they embody the prestige of the event, much like The Cannes Film Festival and MIP-TV, which boast a beautiful beach location," the petition noted. "We, the participants, have become accustomed to come to Santa Monica for the AFM and it has become a yearly tradition. We are happy to perpetuate this tradition because we love the place and because it took us years to work out the functional details of attending the market in Santa Monica." The petition also asserted that the sales suites and screening rooms in the L.A. Live complex would have to be split between hotels and the adjacent convention center. "This will divide participants who will have to run all day long in order to attend to their meetings," the site read. "This will simply be exhausting, not to mention creating a more stressful environment generally. And, as a consequence, participants may choose to shorten their stay which will deeply affect the business of the market. A less competitive market will lead to less attendance and, ultimately, to the extinction of the market." The petition also noted that the Independent Spirit Awards tried in 2010 to move from Santa Monica to downtown L.A., but then moved back to the beach last year. "We do not want to be parked in soulless spaces in the middle of a crowded downtown L.A.," it said. "We want to meet and do our business serenely if possible. Comfort and prestige are the keys to a successful market." Contact Dave McNary at dave.mcnary@variety.com

'Glee' Celebrates Its 300th Musical Performance

FOXRob Stringer, left, Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, Brad Falchuk, Dante DiLoreto and Dana Walden When Glee's Amber Riley, Naya Rivera and Heather Morris, among others, perform Adele's "Rumor Has It"/"Someone Like You" during the show's Nov. 15 episode, it will mark the latest milestone in a somewhat brief yet storied history for the Fox hit. The song will mark the show's 300th musical performance, a feat that Fox co-chairman Dana Walden, Columbia Records topper Rob Stringer as well as the cast and crew celebrated Wednesday on the show's Hollywood set. "This milestone is almost overshadowed by the fact that Glee has now sold more than 35 million downloads and has more Billboard-topping hits than James Brown, Elvis Presley and the Beatles -- basically more than any musical act in history," Walden said Wednesday in front of cast, crew and reporters following filming of the mash-up. "[With] more than 11 million albums sold worldwide, [Glee] is truly a phenomenon when you consider that this group has done all of that." STORY: 'Glee': Jonathan Groff Returns, Another New Directions Defector and More Spoilers Walden thanked the "hardest-working cast" in television and singled out Glee executive producers Ian Brennan, Brad Falchuk, Ryan Murphy and Dante DiLoreto as well as the cast and music producer Adam Anders and choreographer Zach Woodlee while noting that the musical dramedy fits perfectly with the Fox brand. "My company is really known for creating brands: The Simpsons, Glee, Modern Family, Family Guy -- shows that speak to a core group of people and touch them in an emotional and personal way where our shows become part of their lives and culture," she said. "There is no show that I've ever worked on that has done that more than Glee." Stringer noted Columbia Records' strong desire to be part of the show, recalling the first time the company heard the music and screened a clip from the pilot. "We begged to be involved and that was a good decision because here we are, 35 million downloads later, 12 albums later," he said. PHOTOS: 'Glee' Season 3: The Episodics Ahead of presenting a large framed 300 print featuring the names of all 300 songs -- appearing chronologically -- to the cast and creative team, Stringer teased the cast that had they been presented with discs every time they'd reached a milestone, they'd be able to build a house out of it and have enough wood and metal to build an entire gated city. As for the 300th performance itself -- Stringer noted the happy coincidence that Adele happens to also be a Columbia talent -- the mash-up stemmed from an email that Riley received. "Someone emailed me a video of Adele saying she wanted me to sing her song, so I emailed it to Ryan and Brad and I think that's how we got 'Rumor Has It'/'Someone Like You,' " she recalled. STORY: Kristin Chenoweth Thinks Her 'Glee' Days Are Over Joked Murphy: "Amber's been on that kick for literally eight months." As for Adele's thoughts on being part of the Glee milestone, Stringer noted she's a fan of the show and heard the mix Monday. "She approved it personally," he noted. Glee's 300th musical performance will be part of the show's Nov. 15 episode. The 'Piranha 3DD' Trailer: Virtually Precisely What You Anticipate from 'Piranha 3DD'

.publish-content img Sadistic grindhouse throwback 'Piranha 3D' did not have as large of the splash because the Weinstein Company most likely wished upon its release this past year. In the end, between Funny or Die videos and flying male organs, 'Piranha' was everywhere, which still only equaled $25 million in the domestic box office. The cheapie thriller gained double that overseas, though, making the follow up, 'Piranha 3DD,' appear reasonable. Positive thing, too, since this is the only factor reasonable within this bananas new teaser trailer for that film. Hello, David Hasselhoff, giant plastic breasts and machine-gun legged Ving Rhames! Spoiler: Rhames died in 'Piranha 3D'! Regardless of, obviously. The follow up was initially designed to hit theaters in November, but it's been pressed into 2012. La, Calif. -- Kaira Pitt was not able to place the kitty from to begin with in the weekend box office. Wally Disneys The Lion King reissue wasn't any. 1 for that second-straight weekend with $22.a million, based on studio estimations Sunday. That puts it simply in front of Pitts baseball drama Moneyball, a The new sony Pictures release that opened up at No. 2 with $20.six million. Debuting carefully behind at No. 3 was the Warner Bros. family film Dolphin Tale with $20.3 million. Dolphin Tale stars Harry Connick Junior., Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman. The Three-D reissue of 1994s The Lion King has had in $61.7 million since opening the prior weekend to some larger audience than expected. That version could have been produced by Pitts friend Steven Soderbergh, who directed him within the Oceans Eleven movies. But The new sony drawn the connect a squabble with Soderbergh within the script. Soderbergh departed, but Pitt tied to it, going to bring Michael Lewis best-seller Moneyball: The skill of Winning an Unfair Game towards the screen. A lot of it worked using the number-crushing sabermetrics system Beane adopted. To create the drama, The new sony hired Aaron Sorkin, an Oscar champion for his script around the Social Networking, to change a script whose previous scribes incorporated Steven Zaillian, an Oscar champion for Schindlers List. Bennett Burns, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind Capote, was introduced directly into direct. Pitt is also a producer around the film. It wasnt the simplest code to hack. You'd this excellent book, but to translate it wasnt always the simplest factor, stated Rory Bruer, Sonys mind of distribution. You actually needed individuals who supported it, like Kaira, and authors who understood it, along with a director making it something very visual and compelling for those to determine. Dolphin Tale handled a good start despite unpredicted competition to see relatives audiences in the Lion King. Madonna Battles Back, and 5 Other Stories You'll Be Talking About Today

Happy Tuesday! Also in today’s edition of The Broadsheet: Willem Dafoe’s next tumbles into lawsuit limbo… A provocative question about interfaith sex finally gets its own movie adaptation… Seann William Scott’s hockey comedy finds a buyer up north… Danny Glover has unfortunate taste in footwear… and more. · After getting both a fistful of loathsome flowers and her ass handed to her in Venice, an unfazed Madonna regrouped and rallied for Monday night’s Toronto premiere of her directing effort W.E. Alas, one observer noted the film is in prime position to make a Golden Globes run (Ha! And, ouch), while yet another writes about the lukewarm audience response at the gala screening. Harvey Weinstein, meanwhile, did three premiere events in two countries on one night — W.E. and Coriolanus in Toronto, and I Don’t Know How She Does It in New York. I cannot love this man any more than I do at this moment. [NYT, Deadline] · Matthew Jones, who adapted his own novel Boot Tracks as a screenplay for a film featuring Willem Dafoe, Michelle Monaghan and Stephen Dorff, has requested an injunction preventing the adaptation’s release. Telling the story of “an ex-con who seeks vengeance for his jail-house mentor by going on a road trip with a woman he meets along the way,” the movie itself is said by Jones to have been produced from a radically altered, unauthorized version of his screenplay. Welcome to Hollywood? [THR, Esq.] · There is an actual Israeli documentary called Would You Have Sex With an Arab? Jonas gets down to 'Business'

Nick Jonas, center, is no stranger to tuners. He did "Hairspray" with Marissa Jaret Winokur and Diana DeGarmo at the Hollywood Bowl in August. With Nick Jonas set for a five-month toplining gig in the strong-selling Broadway revival of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," the production continues to use creative casting to keep the tuner drawing younger auds and the family crowd to a 1961 satirical musical more often slanted toward an older demo. Jonas is sure to be a lure for the Disney Channel aud. He follows in the footsteps "How to Succeed" star Daniel Radcliffe, already pulling in enthusiastic young auds and their parents to the tuner, and upcoming replacement Darren Criss, the thesp with a high profile among teens thanks to his current role in "Glee." Jonas will play protag J. Pierre-pont Finch in the Frank Loesser comedy about a window-washer who makes his way up the corporate ladder with the aid of a self-help book. Like Radcliffe and Criss, the 19-year-old Jonas is younger than other thesps who have played the part: Both Robert Morse and Matthew Broderick were in their 30s when they portrayed Finch in earlier Broadway incarnations. Producers of the current revival contend that Finch, a man just starting out in his career, would probably skew toward the younger end of the spectrum anyway. Besides, such casting helps the production catch the eye of younger auds that might not otherwise show much interest in a satire about the business world. "It's a residual effect of casting this way," says producer Craig Zadan. "Everybody in the show is aged down, and as a result, your audiences are broader." Zadan and Neil Meron, the "Footloose" producers who also have Broadway-themed TV skein "Smash" in the works, produce "How to Succeed" with Broadway Across America (John Gore, Thomas B. McGrath, Beth Williams), the company opening Harry Connick Jr. starrer "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" on the Rialto later this fall. It remains to be seen whether Jonas or Criss, who will appear in "How to Succeed" for three weeks in January, can log the same boffo Broadway sales as Radcliffe, whose million-dollar-plus frames can be attributed in part to the fans he's accumulated during his years at the head of the Harry Potter screen franchise. For his part, Jonas also has a solid fanbase that's he already alerted to his upcoming gig. "I've been tweeting up a storm," said the performer, who's got 3.2 million followers on Twitter. Jonas' Broadway credits include moppet stints in "Beauty and the Beast," "Les Miserables" and the 1999 revival of "Annie Get Your Gun." More recently, he appeared as Marius in "Les Miz" on the West End and as Link Larkin in the recent Hollywood Bowl staging of "Hairspray." He begins his stint in "How to Succeed" Jan. 24. Radcliffe exits Jan. 1, with Criss filling in Jan. 3-Jan. 22. Contact Gordon Cox at gordon.cox@variety.com

Rosamund Pike Gets One Shot

Jack Reacher gets a female leadAs reported not seven days ago, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie and the good folk at Paramount have been hard at work putting three actresses through their paces to cast One Shot's female lead. Well, time waits for no-one, not even Jack Reacher (although he'd punch it in the face if he ever found out). The votes are in and a decision has been reached: as Deadline Hollywood reports, Rosamund Pike is on the verge of signing up for the Reacher campaign. Pike, so good lately in Barney's Version and An Education, joins Tom Cruise in the Reacher saga. All the talk so far has been on the height discrepancy between Cruise and his character, so it's worth pointing out that he gives away a couple of inches on Pike too. But, seriously, who's measuring? Ahem. As its many fans will know, One Shot sees Reacher putting his muscular frame and thunderdome-sized brain to work puzzling out the case of a lone sniper. The man has been charged with the murder of five men, but is all what it seems or are darker forces at work? Helping him find out will be Pike's Helen Rodin, a local defence lawyer assigned to defend the supposed shooter. Pike is an actress we're very keen on in this parish. She's talented and boasts a flawless American accent. We can't see her in a gun battle but Reacher is more than capable of taking care of the shooting-and-punching business. Hayley Atwell and Clash Of The Titan's Alexa Davalos are the unlucky two to miss out. . The One Shot shoot gets underway soon, with a theatrical release scheduled for early 2013.

BBC Rain

Documentary series about the weather. The rain is an essential part of being British, giving us the English lawn, the sliding tackle and endless grounds for complaint, but what do we really know about it? The programme uncovers the true shape of a raindrop, shows how and why rain falls, and tells remarkable stories of how we have adapted or succumbed to this elemental force of nature, such as James Glaisher's seven-mile hot-air balloon ascent in 1862, and how Charles Macintosh invented the waterproof coat. The Victorians believed that they could master the rain and push it aside, but today climate change threatens us with rain that is wilder and more unpredictable than ever.

Generate's Jordan Levin: How Hollywood's 'Decision by Committee' Climate Stifles Innovation (Q&A)

It has been seven years since Jordan Levin has had to think about managing a fall television schedule.our editor recommendsNATPE Taps Chris Grant and Jordan Levin as New Co-chairs These days, the former WB honcho-turned-Generate chief executive is busy managing amulti-platform studio and talent management firm that counts actor-director Tim Matheson, director-producer Emile Levisetti and comedian Charlie Todd among its clients. Levin and his partners bill their Santa Monica and New York based firm as a next generation media company, as apt to land a ad-sponsored web series as it is to score a TV show or comedy tour. Levin, once referred to as the WB's boy-genius, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the evolution of the media industry, the future of companies like Netflix and what he describes as the most frustrating part of the entertainment business today. The Hollywood Reporter: Give us the cocktail party version of what Generate does. Jordan Levin: We have a talent management division and production development division with an eye towards multiple platforms. The reason for that is simply because I think the industry is becoming largely divided between those who are in the content business and those who are in the distribution business. You can either bet on the pipes and the technology that curates content or you can bet on the value being on the content. If you're betting on content, which is inherently what myself and my colleagues understand and have a passion for, betting on talent is just doubling down on that bet. THR: You look at a company Netflix, which recently decided it would be in the content business as well. Do you foresee more people try to play in both areas? Levin: I think you have to. Distribution is becoming the commodity -- and the more it becomes commoditized, the point of differentiation in value creation is going to reside around content. I believe that in sort of a supply and demand economy, the media business in which we were all predominantly raised was a business in which there was a relatively fixed pool of talent developing and producing content for a very narrow pipe -- a handful of networks and studios-- and there weren't a lot of choices about where to go if you couldn't sell to one of those gatekeepers. But now with all of the distribution channels and choices that exist, I still believe that the content pool is relatively fixed. Sure, the discovery method of talent has changed; you might discover talent now because of YouTube vs. a spec script, but the crème rises to the top. For anyone who's watching American Idol, The Voice or another talent competition on a grand scale, it becomes very obvious very quickly that talent is still relatively rare. So while we can use digital to source talent, it doesn't mean that under ever rock is going to sprout a much greater talent pool. Again, the need for quality premium content is still going to come from a fixed group of people. The question really comes of valuation around that content. I think it's unfortunate that the valuation that Wall Street and the investment community puts on technology companies is greater than that of content companies. Traditional media companies get a discounted valuation compared to companies who create value on the back of content itself. THR: How does that ultimately change? Levin: I don't know. I think everything eventually comes back to content because as much as business models cater to consumers' needs, people in the investment community tend to forget that people's needs are motivated by what they want to experience, what they want to watch and what they want to hear. Recognizing this has become an education process for every generation. The industry gets itself into an odd cycle wherein technology companies become disproportionally large compared to traditional media companies and those companies start to dictate the shape of business. THR: Any examples spring to mind? Levin: You look back at AOL taking over Time Warner and, in retrospect, everyone scratches their heads and asks, 'How could that happen?' It happened because the Street inflated the value of AOL to such a great degree that it was able to do that. There are technology companies that are evolutionary --in some cases, even revolutionary-- right now, but their value is disproportionally higher than that of traditional mediacompanies whose revenues, income and EBITDA are greater. THR: Why would you say that is? Levin: The content business is perceived as a business that isn't easily repeatable. There's no formula to it that guarantees success again and again. Obviously it's a people intensive business. The markets tend to reward companies that can trade a widget or a piece of code because it can be replicated over and over again. And, as we know, people sitting at home watching TV or movies don't want to see the same things over again. A show like Glee or a movie like Bridesmaids gets rewarded because it's different. THR: What's the most frustrating part of the business today? Levin: How few people are empowered to make decisions and how committee-oriented decision making has become in what is inherently a creative medium. Networks and studios historically that have had any brand resonance in the marketplace have primarilybeen lead by decision makers who rightly or wrongly decide what it is that they want to produce and distribute. I'm concerned that as the entertainment industry has become more consolidated and more of a multi-national conglomerate industry, creative decision-making is being lead more by traditional business standards like research and decision by committee and attempts to replicate what's worked in the past. THR: Which takes a toll on innovation... Levin: Exactly, real innovation gets lost. When you look at certain networks and film studios and you see some of the output of those divisions, you really wonder whether some seminal pieces of popular culture would be created and supported today. While there's certainly a role for research, it's very difficult to find companies where there's a firm hand at the tiller. When you do find them, they're usually leaders in their space. Look at a company like CBS. It make sense that they've been the No. 1 network for as long as they have, because there's a clear point of view through which decision making is framed in Les Moonves. Some people may not always agree with what his decisions are, but they all respect the fact that he's willing to make a decision and stand by it. THR: Would you consider returning to a network chief gig? Levin: Surprisingly, I get asked that a lot. My answer is that I miss aspects of it very much. I miss being in a seat where you could hear something, get excited about it and get it made and distributed to other people. That sort of curatorial ability was really rewarding, but I'm not sure whether or not the job that I had exists anymore.I was really lucky to have mentors like Bob Daly, Jamie Kellner, Garth Ancier, Bruce Rosenblum and Barry Meyer who were all very respectful in allowing Susanne Daniels and me to make decisions. They allowed us to put on a program like Buffy the Vampire Slayer whenmaybe they didn't all see it. I just don't think people are empowered to that degree anymore. The challenge of being in that position and trying to rethink what a network is and what it means to be a programming head is extremely exciting in this era, but who the companies are that are really thinking about how to make that change -- how to move forward instead of hanging on to the past -- is unclear to me. Apple Mulling Offer to Buy Hulu (Report)

Apple is considering making an offer for the online video service Hulu, Bloomberg reported Thursday, citing sources. The company is said to be in early talks to buy the site, which is owned by Walt Disney, News Corp., Comcast's NBCUniversal and private equity firm Providence Equity Partners. The sale price could surpass $2 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg and SNL Kagan. Such a large purchase would be unusual for Apple, Wedbush Securities analyst *Scott Sutherland* told Bloomberg. The company's biggest acquisition was the $400 million buy for NeXT Software in 1996; that deal also saw Steve Jobs return to the company fold. Buying the site would give Apple a new subscription service in addition to iTunes as welll as a competitor to Netflix, which is said not to be in the running to make a bid for Hulu. "Hulu would add a new element to their arsenal from a streaming and subscription standpoint," *Brian Marshall,* an analyst at Gleacher Co., told Bloomberg. Among the initial suitors for Hulu were Amazon.com, Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and satellite TV giant DirecTV, according to previous reports. The owners are reportedly offering suitors five years of guaranteed access to their TV shows, including two years of exclusive access. Such programming terms would allow a new owner to have content locked up for a while. Reps for Hulu and Apple declined to comment to Bloomberg.

To Greg Heffley, middle school is the dumbest idea ever invented. It's
a place rigged with hundreds of social landmines, not the least of
which are morons, wedgies, swirlies, bullies, lunchtime banishment to
the cafeteria floor - and a festering piece of cheese with nuclear
cooties. To survive the never-ending ordeal and attain the recognition
and status he feels he so richly deserves, Greg devises an endless
series of can't-miss schemes, all of which, of course, go awry. And
he's getting it all down on paper, via a diary - "it's NOT a diary,
it's a journal!" Greg insists, preferring the less-sissyfied
designation - filled with his opinions, thoughts, tales of family
trials and tribulations, and (would-be) schoolyard triumphs. "One day
when I'm famous," writes Greg, "I'll have better things to do than
answer people's stupid questions all day." So was born the Wimpy Kid's
diary.
